Robots: solution for labor shortage or stealing our jobs?

Since the pandemic has started, the world is shifting towards automation. Thousands of businesses are using robots for the jobs previously done by a human.

From farming to fast food, there is a rise in robotic work. Which puts jobs at risk and makes to reframe society on an urgent basis.

To address rapidly changing conditions, businesses are turning towards artificial intelligence. Recently, Amazon launched its new home Robot Astra which will handle small tasks.

According to the guardian, the American fast-food chain White castle uses hamburger-cooking robots to create ‘’ an avenue for reduced human contact with food during the cooking process’’.

It is quite complicated, since the pandemic has started, there is already unemployment. Shutting down of businesses led to increasing unemployment rates. According to different sources, in 2019 millions of British workers remain unemployed.

Also, startups are focusing on developing new robots that would change the working environment. For example, UK-based startup Small Robot Company has developed two robots to kill weeds in wheat fields. While cutting down, they use chemical pesticides.

Another startup Xihelm, received venture funds from the UK government back in 2018 to build a robot. The robot is capable of harvesting fruits and vegetables in greenhouses. It also uses to pick up tomatoes after using artificial intelligence only identify only the ripest fruit.

Overall, different restaurants are experimenting with artificial intelligence and robotics on the job. Though, most of these robots are in the experimental face and not available for commercial use. For example, the tomato picking robot is in the testing phase.

In Silicon Valley, several startups are working on self-driving cars, however, they are not coming in near future. It’s away from commercial use. Also, it will take time since the government will necessarily craft regulations for these technologies.

Over a decade, artificial intelligence has had a significant impact on the job market. And few areas where technology has led to change within the next few years.

Indeed, many employers are struggling with jobs for several reasons. And automation is an additional worrisome for people despite having high resistance against automation.

However, there is another side of the story. It is also believed that technology brings more employment opportunities with automation.

For example, companies like Amazon and Ocado continue to employ a massive human workforce widely because of robotics.  Since there are no robots for pick up and towing operations that require humans.

In such a situation, retraining and education of workers would be a realistic approach and can improve safety and job assurance.
