AI can predict if it will rain in two hours

Research suggests, artificial intelligence can predict, whether it is going to be rain in the next two hours.

Scientists at Google-owned London AI DeepMind and at the University of Exeter partner with the Met office to build a nowcasting system.

though, traditional methods are use to predict the weather. Which often includes complex educations. They hardly forecast between six hours and two weeks.

Experts believe artificial intelligence will make the task easier.  Also, it provides more accurate results.

Additionally, the Al system is reliable for short-term predictions, including for floods and critical storms.

How helpful is the New Al System?

Climate change is now a global issue which brought drastic changes in weather as well. It is making it harder to anticipate adverse weather conditions.

The severity of the rain and also the frequency, which leads to both death and material damage is very significant.

Met office partnerships and product innovation head Niall Robinson said,

‘’ Extreme weather has catastrophic consequences, including loss of life and, as the effects of climate change suggest, these types of events are set to become more common,’’

He added, ‘’ as such, better short-term weather forecasts can help people stay safe and thrive,’’

The Al system learned how to identify similar patterns of rainfall, using UK radar maps from the year 2016 to 2018. It was tested on maps from 2019 and found 50 met-office meteorologists to be the same and accurate in 89 percent of cases.

Shakir Mohamed, DeepMind senior scientist said,

‘’ it’s very early days but this trial shows that Al could be a powerful tool, enabling forecasters to spend less time trawling through ever-growing piles of prediction data and instead focus on better understanding the implication of their forecasts,’’

He further added,

‘’ This will be integral for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change today, supporting adaptation to changing weather patterns and potentially saving lives.’’

Many factors impact the predictions about weather, for example, precipitation, temperature, and even winds. Meteorologists have a harder time predicting weather and thunderstorms with large grids.

Al, despite being a simple, data-based model, can predict weather around the globe. Tt is more quickly, by taking similar repeated steps from one forecast to the next.

The addition of the Al system makes existing predictions more efficient. It also contributes to increasing the speed and accuracy of forecasting. Which helps to avoid the destructions born out of catastrophes.
