Orica Embraces Microsoft Copilot AI Software in Efforts to Boost Productivity

Explosives manufacturer Orica has emerged as an early user of Microsoft Copilot, an AI software integrated into the Microsoft 365 suite. According to its 2023 annual report, Orica’s participation in the Copilot early adopter program commenced in May. The implementation of Copilot aims to enhance everyday productivity within the Microsoft Office 365 suite while maintaining data security via built-in protective measures.

Governance and AI Adoption

Orica is actively fortifying its internal governance concerning the adoption of artificial intelligence. In the fiscal year 2023, the company initiated the establishment of an enterprise-wide AI Community of Practice. This group’s primary role is to oversee the introduction and operation of AI, define protocols, standards, and principles for the responsible use of such solutions, and ensure compliance with Orica’s risk tolerance, evolving regulatory requirements, and societal expectations.

Future Plans and Financial Performance

AI training remains a central focus for Orica throughout 2024. In their latest financial report, Orica disclosed a net profit of $297.5 million from an almost $8 billion revenue for the full year. The company’s digital solutions arm, particularly its Axis Mining Technology, contributed $212 million in revenue. Orica’s upcoming fiscal year will concentrate on amalgamating and optimizing two acquired businesses—Hopper Industrial Group (HIG) and RIG Technology, alongside the RHINO geophysical sensor business, acquired last year with Axis Mining Technology.
