Microsoft is making a historic investment of $5 billion in Australian cloud infrastructure to support cloud and AI workloads. This ambitious initiative will see the tech giant grow its data center presence across Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney from 20 sites to a total of 29. This is touted as the single largest investment by Microsoft in Australia throughout its 40-year history in the country.
The $5 billion investment is set to be realized over the next two years and will result in a significant increase in Microsoft’s computing capacity by approximately 250 percent. This expansion is aimed at meeting the growing demand for cloud computing services in the region.
Microsoft’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure
In addition to building more data centers, Microsoft plans to establish a ‘Datacentre Academy’ in collaboration with TAFE NSW, commencing in early 2024. The academy’s curriculum will align with various core operational roles within data centers, including technicians, critical environment specialists, inventory and asset management professionals, and IT operations personnel.
This investment follows a notable cloud outage experienced by Microsoft’s Azure cloud in Australia nearly two months ago, which impacted major enterprises such as the Bank of Queensland and Jetstar. Microsoft’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure signifies its dedication to providing reliable and scalable cloud services in the country.
Microsoft Collaborating with Australian Signals Directorate
Microsoft is also collaborating with the Australian Signals Directorate on the Microsoft-Australian Signals Directorate Cyber Shield (MACS) initiative. MACS aims to enhance protection against cyber threats for Australian residents, businesses, and government entities. This collaboration will focus on improving the capabilities for identifying, preventing, and responding to cyber threats, particularly nation-state cyber threats. It will also evolve national threat intelligence sharing capabilities to bolster the nation’s cybersecurity defenses.
Microsoft’s significant investment in Australian cloud infrastructure reflects the company’s commitment to supporting digital transformation and fostering innovation in the region while strengthening its resilience against emerging cybersecurity challenges.
