Nvidia, a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) computing chips, is expanding into the personal computer (PC) chip market by designing central processing units (CPUs) that run the Windows operating system using technology from Arm Holdings. This move is part of Microsoft’s initiative to assist chip manufacturers in creating Arm-based processors for Windows PCs.
The PC chip market has traditionally been dominated by Intel, but this move seeks to challenge Intel’s stronghold. Nvidia, along with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), aims to produce PC chips using Arm technology, and these chips could be available as early as 2025. Qualcomm is already producing Arm-based chips for laptops and plans to share more details about its flagship chip at an upcoming event.
Apple’s success with its custom Arm-based chips for Mac computers has inspired Microsoft and other companies to explore the possibilities of Arm-based processors. These chips have provided improved battery life and high-performance capabilities, and Microsoft desires similar performance for Windows PCs.
Microsoft encourages other chipmakers to enter the market
Microsoft initially partnered with Qualcomm in 2016 to bring Windows to the Arm architecture, which had previously powered smartphones. Qualcomm was granted exclusivity to develop Windows-compatible chips until 2024. However, Microsoft encourages other chipmakers to enter the market after this exclusivity deal expires.
To compete effectively, forthcoming chips from Nvidia, AMD, and others will need to integrate advanced AI features. Microsoft envisions AI-enhanced software becoming a crucial part of the Windows experience.
While this expansion into the Arm-based PC market presents an opportunity for chip manufacturers, it also poses challenges. Software developers have written code for Windows based on the x86 computing architecture used by Intel and AMD. This means that code written for x86 chips may not run seamlessly on Arm-based designs, potentially creating compatibility issues.
Intel, which has been a significant player in the PC chip market, is also incorporating AI features into its chips. AMD’s entry into the Arm-based PC market was reported by SemiAccurate, a chip-focused publication.
