The New South Wales (NSW) Government has embarked on a significant partnership in the field of cardiovascular research by collaborating with two renowned medical research institutions: The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. The objective of this strategic partnership is to establish a cardiovascular research hub in south-western Sydney, an area known for its high incidence of heart-related hospital admissions.
The primary goal of this innovative hub, which is the first of its kind in Australia, is to drive advancements and bolster research efforts aimed at combating heart disease. Heart disease is a leading cause of mortality in Australia, and south-western Sydney, in particular, has a higher prevalence of risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease.
World-class academic clinician-researcher based at Liverpool Hospital
The partnership entails the establishment of a new Chair in Cardiovascular Research, which will be overseen jointly by the Ingham Institute, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD), and UNSW Sydney. The chair will be occupied by a world-class academic clinician-researcher based at Liverpool Hospital, who will spearhead cutting-edge research endeavors to alleviate the considerable burden of cardiovascular disease in the region.
This collaboration will not only provide academic and clinical leadership but will also encourage excellence in collaborative cardiovascular research, innovative teaching, and clinical care. Furthermore, it will facilitate the formation of a dedicated research team stationed at the Ingham Institute, a renowned center for clinical trials. These researchers will have direct access to the expertise and state-of-the-art technology available at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
The NSW Government’s commitment to this initiative is underscored by its investment of $150 million over ten years to support cardiovascular research. A portion of this funding, approximately $8.7 million, has been allocated to nine research projects involving multidisciplinary teams from several research institutions, including three grants that feature research teams from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and the Ingham Institute.
This strategic partnership reinforces Liverpool as a burgeoning center for innovation and research in healthcare, attracting top-quality researchers from around the world. It positions NSW as the leading state for heart health research in Australia and is expected to yield substantial advancements in understanding and addressing cardiovascular disease, ultimately improving health outcomes for Australians.
