NCI kicks off a $40 million HPC upgrade project

The National Computation Infrastructure (NCI) has completed the first stage of a $40m upgrade to its supercomputing facility, adding 1440 Intel Sapphire Rapids processors to its Gadi system.

The upgrade makes Gadi one of the first HPC facilities in the world to use the new XEON processors and is expected to offer 600 million hours annually of computing to local researchers.

With more than 250,000 processor cores, the system is capable of more than 10 quadrillion calculations per second and boasts 100,000TB of research data storage. The energy-efficient system uses direct liquid cooling for the processors and power supplies.

The project was co-funded by the Department of Education’s national collaborative research infrastructure strategy and the NCI Collaboration.
