The Department of Health and Aged Care has signed a fresh three-year deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS), worth $22.9 million, to boost its cloud services.
Since 2022, the department has relied on AWS under a $16.8 million contract, which will expire on June 30. Now, ahead of that deadline, Health has locked in a new agreement that will start on May 1 and run until April 2028.
The new deal covers a range of services, including cloud computing, storage, analytics, and generative AI. AWS will also support Health with proof-of-concept projects aimed at testing new digital health ideas.
Health secured this agreement through the Digital Transformation Agency’s (DTA) whole-of-government cloud arrangement, which renewed its own AWS contract earlier this year.
AWS remains a major cloud provider for Health, alongside Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Together, they help power the department’s growing digital infrastructure.
The timing of this new contract couldn’t be better. The Australian Government’s National Digital Health Strategy 2023–2028 is aiming high, with plans for better data sharing, faster digital services, and technology that can grow with future needs. Cloud platforms like AWS are set to play a big part in bringing those plans to life.
By renewing this deal, the Department of Health and Aged Care is taking a big step forward in building a smarter, quicker, and more connected healthcare system for every Australian.
