The NSW Transport Department leaves the Global Switch data centre

As it continues to relocate data from NSW government data centres, Transport for NSW has become the most recent government organisation to leave Global Switch’s Sydney data centre (GovDC).

For years, the government has supported its many IT systems with a mix of public and on-premises/private cloud solutions, albeit its use of public cloud is slowly growing.

According to the state’s cloud policy, TfNSW will be required to use public cloud for a minimum of 25% of its IT services by 2023, just as other NSW government agencies.

In a $2 million deal signed last month, the government hired AWS to transfer “qualifying environments” from GovDC to AWS, continuing prior agreements from 2019 and 2016.

In the first half of the year, Global Switch lost the Department of Home Affairs, Australian Securities and Investments Commission, and Australian Communications Media Authority.

The Australian Digital Health Agency, the fourth member of the Home Affairs-led group, was also scheduled to leave the facility in July after delaying its departure date owing to supply chain concerns.

Beginning in July, federal agencies must use ‘certified strategic’ or ‘certified assured’ data centre providers to host sensitive data, whole government systems, and protected-level systems.

Strategic data centre providers allow the government to establish ownership and control conditions under the framework for hosting certification, whereas assured providers provide protections in the event that ownership controls or operations change.
