Alphabet, the parent company of Google, and the European Commission are working towards developing a voluntary pact on artificial intelligence (AI) that would involve companies from Europe and beyond. This initiative comes in anticipation of forthcoming regulations governing AI technology, according to EU industry chief Thierry Breton.
Following a meeting between Breton and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai in Brussels, Breton stated that they agreed on the necessity of proactive collaboration among AI developers to establish an AI pact voluntarily, even before the legal deadline for AI regulation takes effect.
In addition, Breton called upon EU member states and lawmakers to finalize the details of the Commission’s proposed AI rules by the end of the year. Currently, negotiations between the two parties have not yet commenced to address their diverging perspectives.
Furthermore, the European Union and the United States have plans to intensify their cooperation on AI, with the aim of establishing minimum standards before the legislation becomes enforceable, as stated by EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager on Tuesday.
