The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has announced significant upgrades to its banking platform through the launch of CommBank App 5.0. This latest version integrates the bank’s CommSec trading app and introduces new AI-driven personalization features. During a strategy update, CBA CEO Matt Comyn emphasized the critical role of digital technology in the bank’s overall strategy.
As part of CommBank App 5.0, CommSec, the bank’s trading platform, will be seamlessly integrated into the digital banking app. This integration allows users to easily invest in Australian shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) directly from the app. While the standalone CommSec site will remain operational, the CommSec Pocket trading platform will eventually be decommissioned and fully integrated into the main app.
CommSec customers can trade in just a few steps without needing to switch between different apps
Meg Bonighton, CBA’s Executive General Manager of Digital and Customer, highlighted the benefits of the CommSec integration, stating that CommSec customers can now trade in just a few steps without needing to switch between different apps. The bank plans to expand the offering to include international shares, providing simple self-directed investing capabilities.
Responding to customer feedback, CBA aims to enhance the app’s personalization, ease-of-use, and search functionality. Bonighton mentioned that App 5.0 includes a significant upgrade to the search feature, allowing users to search for specific transactions related to a particular topic. The app will also provide more relevant content to customers based on their preferences.
The latest app version introduces a new “simple profile switch” feature, enabling CBA’s small business customers to seamlessly switch between business and personal accounts within the app. This addition reflects the bank’s commitment to simplifying its technology architecture.
CBA has established its own internal AI policies and frameworks
CBA’s focus on leveraging technology, AI, and data stacks has led to the development of generative AI capabilities within the app. Dr. Andrew McMullan, Chief Data and Analytics Officer at CBA, explained that generative AI is used to personalize the app’s user experience significantly. Additionally, AI and machine learning algorithms are employed to enhance customer protection against fraud and scams. CBA has established its own internal AI policies and frameworks based on government-defined principles to ensure secure AI deployment throughout the organization.
Through a partnership with H2O.ai, CBA has created CommBank Gen.ai studio, a generative AI solution. Leveraging 49 top-notch large language models (LLMs), the bank aims to improve the service experience for customers in a secure manner. McMullan noted that H2O.ai has commended this collaboration as the first example globally of a ground-up, in-built generative AI studio within the financial services industry.
In addition to the app upgrades, CBA has also launched a new range of merchant and deposit products, including Smart Mini, which completes the rollout of CBA’s fleet of smart payment terminal devices.
