Launch of CommBank Customer Copilot by CBA

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) is set to introduce its own CommBank Customer Copilot and is aiming to develop an AI “banker” capable of providing personalized insights and responding to verbal commands.

During a presentation themed ‘reimagining banking,’ CBA’s Group Chief Information Officer, Gavin Munroe, outlined the bank’s technological aspirations for the coming years. Speaking at CBA’s South Eveleigh office in Sydney, Munroe discussed the upcoming “CommBank Customer Copilot,” describing it as an intuitive communication tool accessible through the mobile app or other interfaces.

The initial version of the copilot will offer generic insights such as interest rates on mortgages or credit card interest rates. However, Munroe explained that with more information about the customer’s banking habits, the copilot will provide deeper financial insights and respond to more complex queries related to transactions, accounting, and budgeting.

The bank’s future plans include a “full co-banker pilot” that will serve as a personalized interface for transactions and banking services, allowing users to interact verbally and make informed decisions.

Munroe expressed excitement about the potential launch of the initial version early or mid-next year, envisioning it as a significant step toward the next generation of banking technology.

Additionally, CBA is expanding its work with Github Copilot, an AI pair-programming tool, to optimize code development and streamline the path to go-live. Munroe highlighted the transformative impact of generative AI on software development, anticipating changes in the definition and interface of applications. He emphasized that this approach would simplify organizational structures, expose more capabilities, and ultimately enhance the speed of delivering software to the customer.
