Call to End Unhealthy Representation of Santa in Shopping Malls

Santa Claus is an integral part of Christmas festivities around the world, and Australia is no exception. But according to an Australian health researcher and food scientist, it’s time to stop making Santa fat.

Dr Vincent Candrawinata says that shopping centres should not go above and beyond to make Santa’s appearance more rotund. He believes that purposely sticking pillows or other stuffing down the front of the famous red suit should be avoided, as it gives children the wrong idea about health and body image.

“I think it’s sending the wrong message to children,” Dr Candrawinata told news.com.au. “It’s reinforcing the idea that fatness is desirable and that being overweight is normal. It’s important to be aware of the messages we’re sending to children, and this is one that should be avoided.”

He argues that instead, shopping centres should focus on making Santa look healthy and fit. This would send a much more positive message to children, and could help to encourage better eating habits in the long-term.

Dr Candrawinata doesn’t only have a problem with Santa being constantly portrayed with a large belly; he also suggests that, instead of cookies and milk, parents should think about something else for Christmas Eve.

“Parents could potentially begin a discussion with their kids about possibly leaving green and red apples – which are Christmas colours – for Santa as a healthier option, as it is a good place to start making changes,” he said.
