Amazon cloud outage hits major websites, streaming apps

As people shopped ahead of Christmas, a significant outage impacted Amazon’s cloud services in the United States, briefly knocking off streaming platforms Netflix and Disney+, Robinhood, a broad range of applications, and Amazon.com’s e-commerce website.

“Many services have already restored,” Amazon noted on its status dashboard. “However, we are working toward full recovery across services.”

According to their social media profiles, Amazon’s Ring security cameras, mobile banking app Chime, and robot vacuum cleaner producer iRobot uses Amazon Web Services (AWS). According to Downdetector.com, the trading app Robinhood and Walt Disney’s streaming services Disney+ and Netflix were all unavailable.

“Netflix, which operates virtually all of its infrastructure on AWS, looks to have lost 26% of its traffic,” said Doug Madory, head of internet intelligence at analytics firm Kentik.

Amazon stated that the disruption was caused by network devices and was connected to APIs supplied from its US-EAST-1 region.

Users began reporting problems about 4.30 a.m. AEDST on Wednesday, and the outage may have affected a larger number of people.

According to the web tool review website ToolTester, Amazon has had 27 outages connected to its services in the last 12 months.

In June, websites such as Reddit, Amazon, CNN, PayPal, Spotify, Al Jazeera Media Network, and the New York Times were affected by an hour-long outage caused by Fastly, a US-based network service provider.
