Instagram Chief Mr. Mosseri, announces the launch of the ‘’take-a-break’’ feature, initially launching in the UK, United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. According to the Chief, the new feature will help parents and teens to manage their time on the app. Moreover, Parents will be able to see how much time their Children spend on Instagram and can set time limits. Meanwhile, the teens can get a reminder to take a break from the application. The announcement is made a day before Adam Mossori’s appearance before US senators for an online safety investigation.
Also, France Haugen’s leaked documents from inside Facebook blaming Instagram for increased anxiety and depression. Following the events, Mr. Mosseri is expects to appear before Senate Committee to provide information regarding Child safety and its plan. The committee also calls this ‘’ potential legislative solution.’’
Social Media Consultant on a new feature
Social media consultant Matt Navarra said the timing of the announcement by Instagram was ‘’ interesting. He said, ‘’ Instagram’s boss will want to have something new and meaningful to show US senators when they grill him… the new features will give worried parents more tools to help keep their children safe when using Instagram, but many will wonder why it has taken them so long to act.’’
For the last couple of months, Instagram is under pressure to take action over teens’ use of the platform. Furthermore, it is said that teens are getting depress and they have been involve in unhealthy activities on Instagram influencing their mental health. Therefore, the site was pressurize to take action and make a safe place for young users.
Take –a-break Feature
Though time limit is already available on Instagram, however, this new feature will give more personalized use of the application. It will let the parents see their Children’s time limits, and also allow teens to opt-in to a system that will notify parents if the teenager files a report against an Instagram user.
Mr. Mosseri said, ‘’ If someone has been scrolling for a certain amount of time, we’ll ask them to take a break from Instagram and suggest that they set reminders to take more breaks in the future,’’ He added, ‘’ The feature would also show them tips from experts to ‘’ help them reflect and reset,’’
Mosseri added that the tool is particularly important for teens to fully understand what information they’ve shared on Instagram, what is visible to others, and to have an easier way to manage their digital footprint,’’.
