Australian government allocates $10bn to ease cost of living pressures

Australia’s government has announced a budget allocation of A$14.6 billion ($9.84 billion) over four years to provide relief for families and businesses. The  aim is to ease the burden of living costs without fueling inflation. The government aims to directly address price pressures and inflation, which have slightly eased but remain at 30-year highs of 7.0% in the first quarter.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers emphasized that the focal point of the budget would be cost-of-living relief measures that do not contribute to inflation. Chalmers stated that the budget was carefully designed to alleviate the financial strain on individuals rather than exacerbate it.

The forthcoming budget will unveil financial assistance for over 5 million low-income families, small businesses, and pensioners who are grappling with high energy bills. Chalmers has repeatedly stressed the need for spending restraint in the budget to mitigate inflationary pressures, while still providing some relief. This comes after the Reserve Bank of Australia surprised markets last week by raising interest rates, contrary to market expectations of a prolonged pause.

The Reserve Bank of Australia recently cautioned that inflation risks are tilted upward due to low productivity growth, increasing energy costs, and a surge in rental prices. In addition to these relief measures, the government has already allocated A$11.3 billion for wage increases for aged care workers over four years and has introduced a 5% tobacco tax and A$2.4 billion in additional taxes on oil and gas producers.

While the budget is expected to show a sharp reduction in Australia’s deficit, fueled by tax windfalls from commodity exports, fiscal challenges remain a significant concern.
