In order to reduce unplanned outages, NBN Co is testing a system in the lab that sounds an alarm before third parties damage fibre.
The network provider is testing a FiberSense service dubbed DigitalAsset for three months.
The device utilises artificial intelligence to determine whether adjacent activities might accidentally damage fibres by detecting vibrations at specific frequencies along the fibre.
It is being tested in Melbourne on a fibre path and at an NBN Co test site.
It may result in fewer unplanned power outages caused by accident and ensuring that homes, communities, and businesses are linked.
According to FiberSense CEO Dr. Mark Englund, the study “will deploy our patented software based sensor portfolio to give early warning and event detection notifications that can disrupt critical infrastructure like the NBN from third party deliberate or inadvertent damage.”
The fundamental data services running on the NBN Co fibre are not hampered by the DigitalAsset service.
Southern Cross Cable Networks, Basslink, and TransGrid are a few further organisations utilising the technology.
