Couples and women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) have been given a much-needed financial lifeline, thanks to an Australia-first policy introduced by the New South Wales (NSW) government.
The Affordable IVF Initiative, introduced on Tuesday, provides a $2000 lifeline to help women and couples with the cost of undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
The initiative, which is the first of its kind in Australia, is part of the NSW government’s $80 million commitment to providing financial assistance for those seeking IVF treatment. The Affordable IVF Initiative will help 12,000 couples pay for out-of-pocket costs associated with the procedure. This includes the cost of IVF drugs, consultation fees, and specialist services.
The Affordable IVF Initiative is the latest in a series of initiatives brought about by the NSW government to help those seeking IVF treatment. The NSW government has also committed to providing free IVF cycles to eligible women and couples, as well as subsidising the cost of IVF drugs.
The NSW Treasurer, Matt Kean, said the Coalition’s financial support had been incorporated into the budget for 2022-2023, and it would also boost access to lower-cost IVF treatment through clinics backed by the public, as well as fertility preservation services for patients undergoing medical procedures.
IVF is one of the most popular methods of fertility treatment, with many couples turning to it in order to conceive a child. However, the cost of IVF can be a major barrier to access, with a single cycle of treatment costing between $9,372 and $10,112, and potentially increasing to $11,217 if a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is used.
The $2000 rebate is available to those who are eligible for the Medicare Safety Net and who have a valid referral from a doctor. Eligible couples are also required to use IVF services provided by an approved provider. In addition, the rebate is only available for the first cycle of IVF treatment and does not cover any subsequent cycles.
