Western Australian Police to Equip Vehicles and Stations with Starlink for Improved Connectivity

The Western Australian Police Force has announced a significant investment of $8.5 million in Starlink equipment and internet services. This initiative aims to provide connectivity to 550 police vehicles and 129 regional police stations. The decision to deploy Starlink technology follows a successful three-month trial involving officers stationed in remote areas and Water Police.

Once fully implemented, this rollout is expected to greatly enhance the capabilities of law enforcement officers, benefiting their day-to-day patrols and specialist teams, including the Regional Operations Group, Tactical Response Group, and Regional Enforcement Unit. A key advantage of this initiative is the ability for officers to access mission-critical information, automatic number plate recognition data, and real-time emergency alerts even when outside cellular or radio coverage.

Furthermore, the technology will enable officers to livestream footage from body-worn cameras and vehicle dashboard cameras directly to the State Operations Command Centre in Perth, as well as access aircraft and security camera footage. This enhanced situational awareness will empower frontline officers and support real-time decision-making during emergencies.

The Western Australian Police Force has described this deployment as “agency-wide” and claims it is a “world-first” initiative that will provide regional officers with metropolitan-level quality-of-service, ensuring high-speed internet access across the entire state. Police Minister Paul Papalia emphasized that this move will mark a significant improvement in communication coverage for officers operating in one of the world’s largest police districts.
