Voyager 2 Reestablishes Limited Contact as It Ventures 12 Billion Miles Away from Earth

Voyager 2, the space probe launched in 1977 to explore the outer solar system, has reached a remarkable distance of over 12.3 billion miles (19.9 billion km) from Earth, now speeding through interstellar space at an estimated 34,390 mph (55,346 km/h) in the vast expanse between stars.

Since 21 July, Voyager 2 has been unable to receive commands or transmit data back to Earth through NASA’s Deep Space Network, a network of massive radio antennas worldwide. Nevertheless, there is hope for the probe as limited contact has been reestablished.

Despite being nearly 20 billion kilometers (over 12 billion miles) away, signals from Voyager 2 reached Earth in approximately 18 hours, confirming the spacecraft’s continued functionality and good health, according to NASA.

The space agency’s huge dish in Canberra, Australia, has been tirelessly attempting to detect any stray signals from the distant probe. Additionally, the antenna has been sending the correct command to Voyager 2’s location, in the hope of reestablishing full communication.

Voyager 2’s programming includes multiple annual orientation resets to ensure its antenna remains pointed at Earth. The next scheduled reset on 15 October should enable communication to resume.

In the meantime, NASA anticipates that the spacecraft will maintain its planned trajectory through the universe, laden with scientific instruments.
