US Space Force stops using ChatGPT and other AI techniques

Financial Times Partnership with OpenAI

The US Space Force has temporarily halted the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT within its workforce due to concerns about data security. A memo dated September 29, addressed to Guardians (the Space Force’s workforce), mandates that personnel refrain from utilizing AI tools, including large-language models, on government computers until they receive formal approval from the Chief Technology and Innovation Office of the Space Force.

This suspension is attributed to perceived data aggregation risks associated with these AI tools. Over the past year, the utilization of generative AI, powered by large language models that ingest vast amounts of historical data for learning, has grown substantially. These technologies underpin evolving products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, capable of rapidly generating various types of content, including text, images, or video from simple prompts.

Lisa Costa, the Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of the Space Force, expressed in the memo that this technology has the potential to revolutionize their workforce and enhance the ability of Guardians to operate swiftly.

A spokesperson from the Air Force confirmed the temporary ban, as initially reported by Bloomberg. They stated, “A strategic pause on the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models within the US Space Force has been implemented as we determine the best path forward to integrate these capabilities into Guardians’ roles and the USSF mission.” This measure is temporary and aimed at safeguarding the service’s data and the interests of Guardians.

Costa explained in the memo that her office has established a generative AI task force in collaboration with other Pentagon offices to explore responsible and strategic ways to incorporate this technology.

Additional guidance regarding the Space Force’s use of generative AI is expected to be released in the coming month.
