For an unknown price, Uber has acquired Vehicle Next Door, an Australian peer-to-peer car-sharing company.
Car Next Door was founded in 2012 as a method for people to hire out their automobiles while not in use.
“Post purchase, Car Next Door will report into Uber’s Australian team, but will otherwise operate independently, with its existing leadership team continuing focused on creating and scaling their technology in new locations throughout Australia,” Uber said in a statement.
Dom Taylor, general manager of Uber Australia and New Zealand, stated that 2022 marks “10 years since both Uber and Car Next Door began in Australia.”
“A lot has changed in that time,” he continued, “but one thing has remained constant: a common conviction that we need to make transportation not just safe, convenient, and economical – but also sustainable.”
Taylor stated that Car Next Door will provide Uber users with something they did not have previously – access to a car for “mid-range and longer-distance excursions.”
“This agreement will change that, and it will mean that the Uber platform can be a dependable and convenient alternative to owning a car,” Taylor added.
Will Davies, CEO and co-founder of Automobile Next Door, stated that the transaction will allow the firm to “grow out our aspirations and try to shift Australians away from the over-reliance on the private car.”
