Twitter claims to delete more than 1 million spam accounts daily

According to executives, Twitter deletes more than 1 million spam accounts daily, offering fresh information about attempts to lessen dangerous automated bots in response to billionaire Elon Musk’s request for more information.

The update comes after Musk threatened to scuttle a US$44 billion (A$64 billion) deal to buy Twitter unless the business could demonstrate that spam and bot accounts constituted less than 5% of people who saw advertisements on the social media platform.

After purchasing Twitter, Musk had stated that one of his top tasks will be to “fight the spam bots or die trying.”

In a conference call, the company reaffirmed that less than 5% of users receive spam accounts, a statistic that hasn’t altered since the company’s 2013 public disclosures.

In order to determine and report to shareholders the percentage of spam and bot accounts on the site, Twitter claimed human reviewers manually check thousands of Twitter accounts at random using a combination of public and private data.

The business stated that it does not think such accounts could be calculated outside since it would require private information, but it would not elaborate on the kind of information it would give Musk.
