296,019 email addresses and customer numbers belonging to Toyota have been exposed in a hack, the company has announced.
The car manufacturer said that customers who have been using T-Connect may have had their information leaked to hackers.
The T-Connect system is an in-vehicle infotainment system that allows drivers to connect to the internet and use various apps. Toyota said it had become aware of “unauthorised access” to customer email addresses and customer numbers.
The company is now urging customers to reset their passwords and is working with authorities to investigate the incident.
The Japanese automaker said the customers affected are those who signed up for the service from July 2017 on. The company is in the process of notifying those who may have been affected and is offering them free credit monitoring services.
The access history of the data server where the information was stored could not confirm an investigation conducted by security experts.
It is not yet known whether the breach will affect Toyota drivers in Australia.
