Rishi Sunak hints at banning tiktok from UK government devices. Sunak says he will take ‘whatever steps necessary’ to protect Britain’s security. Following the lead of other countries who have removed TikTok from government devices over concerns about its links to China. The UK is also exploring the possibility of taking similar action.
The Prime Minister confirmed that the government is monitoring the situation and evaluating the actions of its allies in this regard. In fact, even the European Commission and European Parliament have banned TikTok on their staff devices.
Talking to ITV Sunak said,“We want to make sure that we protect the integrity and security of sensitive information. And we will always do that and take whatever steps are necessary to make sure that happens.”
Furthermore, in an interview with the BBC, Sunak said: “We take security of our devices seriously.”
If UK take such action, it would disappointing , TikTok
On Monday, TikTok responded to reports suggesting that the UK government was about to ban it from its devices. TikTok stated that it would feel disappointed if the government took such action. The app’s ownership by the Beijing-based ByteDance has raised concerns among politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. Politicians fear that the Chinese state could access its data or manipulate its recommendation algorithm.
According to The Sunday Times, the government security group, a team within the Cabinet Office, had conducted a review of TikTok. The National Cyber Security Centre had identified security risks related to the app. In response, a spokesperson for TikTok expressed a willingness to work with the UK government to address any concerns. The spokesperson also noted that similar decisions made by other countries to ban TikTok were often based on “misplaced fears” and influenced by geopolitics.
The prime minister’s deputy official spokesperson confirmed that the government’s position on banning TikTok from government devices remains unchanged. Moreover, spokesperson emphasized that all departments have comprehensive measures in place to ensure the security of IT devices, which includes the management of risks associated with third-party applications.
