The Australian government announced new grounds to cancel the foreign national visa

 The federal government targets tech espionage with new visa cancellation for foreign nationals. According to the federal government, if any foreign national is found to present an ‘’unreasonable risk of unwanted critical technology knowledge transfer’’, the visa will be cancelled.

Karen Andrews, home affairs minister will be granted powers, however, changes are made ahead of the caretaker period. Meanwhile, there is no timeframe for the enforcement.

Grounds for Cancellation

For all visa holders, the same subject will be applicable. However, certain protection and humanitarian visas for which cancellation will be discretionary. These powers are contain in the new critical technology regulations. The new critical technology regulations give all the powers to the minister to refuse the visa. It will start with international students (subclass 500) in July.

For international students, the requirements now include obtaining minister approval before changing the course of study. Or either research topic or thesis from July.

Protect Australian Critical technologies

These new regulations aim to protect ‘’Australia’s critical technologies’’ by plugging haps in the visa framework. It prevents unwanted knowledge transfer to foreign entities. As per the government’s blueprint, 5G, 6G, Quantum computing and artificial intelligence are among the critical technologies.

An explanatory memorandum explains, ‘’Australia’s ability to harness the opportunities created by critical technologies has a significant impact on our economic success, national interest and community safety.’’

It states, ‘’ Technological advances drive increased productivity, growth and improved living standards; but also have potential to harm our national security and undermine our democratic value.’’

The delegate must consider, ‘’ the person’s background and affiliations and the sensitivity of the material’’ the minister says.

Phil Honeywood, CEO of international education of Australia said, ‘’ clearly affected education institutions and students will be calling for greater transparency before the July implementation of these measures.’’ He further added that everyone in Australia supports national security safeguards.
