Tesla’s Financial Revelations & Texas Move

Tesla’s expenditure on advertising via Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has come under scrutiny. Recent revelations emerging from the company’s annual proxy statement made things clear. The statement disclosed that Tesla disbursed approximately $200,000 on advertising through February. This move followed last year’s decision by Musk to yield to shareholder pressure and delve into advertising for Tesla.

The advertisements appeared on various platforms such as Google search results and YouTube. However, it became evident that Tesla was not only advertising its products but also channeling funds back into Musk’s social media venture. The specifics of these transactions were brought to light in the proxy statement, which delineated “related person transactions.”

In addition to advertising expenses, Tesla engaged in other financial dealings with X, including payments totaling $50,000 in 2023 and $30,000 up to February 2024 for various agreements. Similarly, X reciprocated by paying Tesla approximately $1 million in 2023 and around $20,000 through February 2024 for unspecified services. Although the nature of these agreements remains undisclosed, reports suggest the exchange of employees following Musk’s acquisition of X and the mutual focus on developing AI products.

These financial exchanges are not exclusive to Tesla and X. They extend across Musk’s other ventures. For example, SpaceX paid Tesla $2.1 million in 2023 and roughly $800,000 through February 2024 for commercial agreements. Conversely, Tesla compensated SpaceX $700,000 in 2023 and $100,000 through February 2024 for the use of a corporate jet. Similar transactions occurred between Tesla and The Boring Company, with Tesla paying $200,000 in 2023 and $1 million through February 2024.

Moreover, Tesla disclosed its engagement with a security firm owned by Musk, costing $2.4 million in 2023 and approximately $500,000. This expenditure covered security services for Musk, including those related to his duties at Tesla.

Meanwhile, amidst legal challenges, Musk announced intentions to relocate Tesla’s state of incorporation to Texas. The decision is pending shareholder approval. The company’s annual meeting is scheduled for June 13. The process involved meticulous evaluation by a special committee. Aiming for an independent decision unaffected by external narratives surrounding Musk and Tesla.
