Revellers in Sydney are in for an extraordinary treat this New Year’s Eve as they will have the best chance yet at catching a glimpse of the city’s world-famous fireworks display. In a surprising announcement, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns sent shockwaves through the partygoer community by declaring that Sydney’s iconic fireworks extravaganza would once again be free for all to enjoy.
This remarkable decision, in fulfilment of an election promise, sees the abolition of the “out of control fees” that had been introduced over a decade ago.
For many years, Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks have been a source of pride and wonder, drawing both locals and international visitors to the iconic harbourside celebrations.
The dazzling display over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House has become synonymous with the welcoming of a new year, marking a fresh start and a time for celebration.
However, in recent years, concerns had been raised about the accessibility and affordability of this spectacular event. The introduction of fees had made it increasingly challenging for ordinary citizens to partake in the festivities, leading to frustration and disappointment for many.
Premier Chris Minns, aware of these concerns, made it a priority to address the issue and ensure that the event remained inclusive for everyone.
The Premier announced that the alteration would enable over 60,000 attendees to once again enjoy the renowned fireworks display without charge. This year, the expenses for the fireworks spectacle varied, with prices ranging from $20-$40 for Mrs Macquarie’s Point and soaring to as high as $89 for The Amphitheatre. Astonishingly, tickets to witness the event at Portside, situated on the western boardwalk in front of the Sydney Opera House, were priced at a staggering $850 per ticket.
