As Suncorp explores opportunities to extend generative AI beyond internal applications, the company is focusing on developing more robust AI safety standards. These standards will apply to both its technological infrastructure and business operations, ensuring safe and ethical AI deployment.

Suncorp Advances AI Safety Initiatives
The insurance giant is currently hiring for a new role, an AI Safety Manager. The manager will be responsible for designing and implementing AI safety protocols. This individual will also ensure these standards are effectively integrated into both in-house AI systems and third-party applications.

Priyanka Paranagama, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Executive General Manager of AI Transformation, shared with Digital Nation that Suncorp’s approach to AI risk management and governance continues to align closely with the federal government’s AI ethics principles. Additionally, the company is now incorporating the voluntary AI safety standards. Those introduced by the Department of Industry in September of the previous year.

“We are striving to balance the immense potential of AI with the necessity of operating within a well-defined risk framework,” Paranagama explained.

She emphasized that deploying generative AI models or outputs to customers requires additional risk mitigation efforts. “As our generative AI applications expand from internal use to providing direct insights to customers, we are identifying and implementing the necessary controls to ensure safety and reliability,” Paranagama added.
