Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is taking legal action against the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). X accuses CCDH of making false claims and urging advertisers to halt investments on the platform. The dispute stems from a media report that CCDH’s research indicated an increase in hate speech towards minority communities on X’s platform.
X, along with its CEO Linda Yaccarino, refutes the report’s findings, labeling them as false and based on outdated metrics shortly after Twitter’s acquisition. They argue that the data was taken out of context to make unsubstantiated allegations about the platform.
In response to X’s legal threats, CCDH’s lawyers condemn the platform for trying to intimidate those fighting against hate speech and harmful content online. They maintain that X’s allegations lack factual basis.
The crux of the lawsuit is CCDH’s alleged unauthorized access to X’s data and scraping information from the platform, which goes against X’s terms and conditions.
CCDH has yet to respond to the situation outside regular business hours.
It’s worth noting that X has recently initiated lawsuits against other entities, including four unnamed entities in Texas and Israel’s Bright Data, for data scraping incidents.
