In a Twitter Spaces audio chat that lasted around 90 minutes, Elon Musk shared details about his newly established artificial intelligence company, xAI, revealing its purpose as the pursuit of understanding the universe. During the conversation, Musk delved into various topics, including Earth’s evolution and the fragility of civilization.
Humorously, Musk described xAI’s mission statement as “what the hell is really going on?” underscoring the company’s quest for deeper comprehension.
Musk’s announcement of xAI came after he accused OpenAI and Google of neglecting the potential risks to humans in their AI development efforts. As of now, there has been no response from OpenAI or Google regarding Musk’s comments.
Musk also criticized AI companies for utilizing Twitter data in their model training
The primary objective of xAI is to build “good AGI” (artificial general intelligence), an AI system capable of problem-solving on par with human abilities, providing an alternative to the approaches taken by Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI.
During the Spaces session, which experienced a delayed start to enable wider user access, Musk mentioned that xAI would collaborate closely with his other ventures, Twitter and Tesla. The company intends to leverage public tweets to train its AI models and may also work with Tesla on AI software, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that could accelerate Tesla’s advancements in self-driving capabilities.
Musk also criticized AI companies for utilizing Twitter data in their model training, suggesting that such practices may be unlawful. With a strong stance on AI regulation, Musk has sought meetings with White House officials and emphasized the importance of regulatory frameworks during recent discussions with high-ranking government officials in China.
