Elon Musk’s social media company X, previously known as Twitter, has announced its decision to remove the feature that allows users to block other accounts. This protective function, which restricts specific accounts from contacting a user, viewing their posts, or following them, will be deleted except for direct messages (DMs). The mute function, which prevents users from seeing specific accounts without notifying them, will be retained.
Musk’s move has stirred controversy due to his reputation as a free speech advocate. Critics argue that this approach could lead to increased hate speech and antisemitic content on the platform. Some governments have also accused the company of inadequate content moderation.
The decision to remove or limit the block feature might potentially clash with the guidelines set by Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store. Both platforms require apps with user-generated content to offer the capability to block abusive users.
In response to concerns, Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino defended Musk’s decision, emphasizing the company’s commitment to user safety and the development of improved tools to replace the current block and mute functions.
