India’s space agency, ISRO, has released images and videos taken by its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft as it approaches the lunar south pole, a region that holds significant scientific interest due to the detection of water ice. The spacecraft’s lander successfully underwent a deboosting operation, reducing its orbit to 113km x 157km. The ISRO launched the spacecraft on July 14, and the lander is scheduled to attempt a touchdown on August 23.
The lunar south pole is known for its rough terrain, posing a challenge for successful landings. This region was also the site of India’s previous mission, Chandrayaan-2, which unfortunately crashed in 2019.
Russia is also in the race to explore the lunar south pole, with its Luna-25 lander set to land on August 21, just before India’s attempt. The Russian mission aims to investigate water ice, which could be crucial for future lunar missions and potentially establishing a lunar colony.
Both India and Russia have national interests in successful lunar landings, symbolizing their space capabilities and accomplishments. While Russia’s mission is part of its efforts to assert independence in space following geopolitical tensions, India’s lunar exploration aligns with its push for private space investments and satellite-based ventures.
