Service The state of New South Wales has shortlisted face matching technology for identity verification

Service A shortlist of software choices to power liveness detection and facial matching has been assembled as part of NSW’s aim to extend face verification technology to its digital channels.

Customers will eventually utilise software to establish their identification for services that require identity proofing level three, according to the one-stop shop for government services, which went looking for software in November (IP3).

IP3 is the highest degree of verification that the federal government’s trusted digital identification framework (TDIF) is anticipated to deliver without requiring in-person verification.

Customers will be able to take a selfie and compare it to an on-file identification photo, such as one from a driver’s licence, with the data being erased once the photographs have been matched.

The procurement had moved to the next round, according to a representative for Service NSW, who would not provide the number of shortlisted bids.

“Service NSW is reaching out to shortlisted companies to get a price for picture verification capabilities following a successful open request for information,” a spokesperson said.

“Two product features include a liveness check… and face matching,” according to the capabilities, which are similar to those used in the Australian Taxation Office’s myGovID digital identity software.

The NSW government wants residents to have ownership over their digital identities using decentralised credentials.

To realise this objective, the government set aside $8.9 million in December to begin work on a customised digital wallet.

The government just released a new website with more information about its digital identity programme.
