Queensland teachers win the ‘’right to disconnect’’ and legally allow them to ignore work calls and emails outside of school. The teachers will be encouraged to ‘’switch off’’ their devices after work hours.

The Australian report that the move comes from the part of reforms introduced to Queensland that agrees to lift the wages of the teachers. As per clause ‘’digital Detox’’ teachers can shut their computers and not open them until the next day. It’s an effort to resolve the burden on teachers.

What is Digital Detox?

Digital Detox is a time when someone voluntarily refrains from using digital devices such as computers, and smartphones. ‘’ The clause ‘’digital detox’’ is from the Queensland teacher’s union to allow teachers to switch off their phones. Enterprise agreement reads, ‘’“Employees are encouraged to disconnect from digital technologies and communications when accessing rest time, weekends, and leave/vacation periods, except in exceptional circumstances,”

“The Department is committed to minimizing digital communications with employees to ensure an appropriate work/life balance is met, whilst accommodating operational needs.”

Switch-off hours are to be written into workplace agreements

Finance Sector Union and a number of other Australian unions recently called for switch-off hours to be made part of workplace agreements. Sally McManus, Secretary Australian Council for Trade Unions said that the right to disconnect was ‘’’ necessary not only for workers’ mental wellbeing but to also make sure that workers with caring responsibilities-who are mostly women-don’t fall unfairly behind their colleagues in terms of pay, advancement, and promotion”.
