PayPal names an Intuit veteran as its new CEO

PayPal has chosen Alex Chriss, a senior executive from tax-preparation software company Intuit, to assume the role of its next CEO. This move comes as PayPal seeks to expand its presence in the payments market catering to small businesses.

Alex Chriss, known for his adeptness in dealmaking, will succeed current CEO Dan Schulman next month. Schulman will continue to serve on PayPal’s board until the next annual stockholders’ meeting in May.

This transition marks a pivotal moment for the digital payments giant, which will be under new leadership for the first time since its separation from e-commerce firm eBay in 2015. Analysts speculate that Chriss’s appointment might signal an increased focus on mergers and acquisitions.

Chriss’s background aligns well with PayPal’s renewed emphasis on supporting small merchants and the launch of “PayPal Complete Payments,” a payments processing solution tailored for small and medium-sized businesses.

One of Chriss’s notable achievements at Intuit was the successful $12 billion acquisition and integration of Mailchimp in 2021. Having spent nearly two decades at Intuit, he currently holds the position of Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Small Business and Self-Employed Group.

Analysts view Chriss’s appointment positively, as it addresses concerns among investors about PayPal’s performance in acquiring and integrating assets in recent years. This move could inject renewed energy into the company’s merger and acquisition endeavors.

Despite the excitement surrounding Chriss’s appointment, the challenge of addressing PayPal’s weak margins remains. The company has been under scrutiny from investors for cost-cutting measures. Moreover, competition in the buy now, pay later (BNPL) sector, particularly from Apple, adds complexity to PayPal’s strategic positioning.

To maintain a competitive edge, PayPal has explored various avenues, including its recent launch of a US dollar stablecoin, making it the first major fintech firm to embrace digital currencies for payments and transfers.

While Chriss’s appointment sparks anticipation about PayPal’s M&A aspirations, the ongoing concern about the company’s margins is expected to temper expectations. Analysts predict that the focus on improving margins and returning capital to shareholders will persist, driven in part by activist investor Elliott Management’s involvement. Elliott Management acquired a stake in PayPal in August of the previous year, and while no public disputes have arisen, analysts believe the company’s margin-improvement focus is influenced by Elliott’s presence.
