A court in Australia fined Dell $10 million

Australia’s Federal Court has ruled that Dell Technologies’ local unit must pay $10 million in penalties for deceptive practices related to discounts for add-on computer monitors.

Following legal action initiated by Australia’s competition regulator, the Federal Court found Dell Australia guilty in June of providing misleading information to customers regarding prices or discounts for additional monitors on its website.

Liza Carver, Commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, emphasized that this outcome conveys a robust message to businesses that presenting false representations about prices or inflating discounts is a significant violation of consumer law and will result in substantial penalties.

Dell Australia had sold over 5,300 add-on monitors with exaggerated discounts between August 2019 and December 16, 2021. In response to the ruling, a Dell Australia spokesperson stated to Reuters that the company would collaborate with affected customers to offer appropriate refunds along with interest. Furthermore, they are taking measures to enhance their pricing processes to prevent such errors from recurring.
