Nvidia, MediaTek Collaborate on Car Technology

Nvidia Corp and MediaTek Inc have announced a collaboration aimed at developing cutting-edge technology for advanced vehicle infotainment systems. The partnership aims to enable infotainment displays in vehicles to stream video, play games, and interact with drivers using artificial intelligence (AI).

At the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, the companies revealed that MediaTek will integrate Nvidia’s graphic processing unit (GPU) chiplet and software into the system-on-chips (SoCs) it supplies to automakers for infotainment displays.

This collaboration will make MediaTek systems using Nvidia software compatible with automated driving systems based on Nvidia technology. The infotainment displays can showcase the vehicle’s surroundings, while cameras monitor the driver.

As automakers continue to enhance in-vehicle displays and entertainment systems with features like gaming, voice-activated AI, driver monitoring systems, and automated driving displays, the complexity of these systems is increasing.

Qualcomm, MediaTek’s main competitor in the smartphone market, has also been targeting automakers. Qualcomm and Salesforce recently announced a partnership to develop a new connected vehicle platform.

By partnering with MediaTek, Nvidia gains broader access to the $12 billion market for infotainment SoCs. Nvidia has primarily focused on luxury automotive brands like Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover. On the other hand, MediaTek, known for its presence in the Android smartphone chip sector, offers its Dimensity Auto technology to affordable mass-market vehicle lines, leveraging its strengths in mobile connectivity and Android systems.

According to Danny Shapiro, Nvidia’s Vice President of Automotive, MediaTek addresses segments that Nvidia has not yet targeted, expanding their potential reach in the automotive industry.

No specific automotive customers were identified by the companies at this time.
