As part of an imminent cabinet change, the NSW government will create a new ministerial post to position the state as a major R&D economy.
On Thursday, Premier Dominic Perrottet announced the planned cabinet job and a new Department of Enterprise and Investment while detailing his plans for Sydney. “We will create a new Department of Enterprise and Investment,” he stated as he delivered the Bradfield Oration.
“Within that department, I will designate a Minister for Science, Innovation, and Technology — to turn our in-house research into future economic potential.”
The new enterprise and investment portfolio will expand on the government’s January action plan to stimulate R&D. While research is one of the state’s “secret talents,” Perrottet believes the outbreak has emphasized the need to “solidify Sydney’s status as the smart metropolis down under.”
On Thursday, he added, “NSW is home to some of the world’s best universities and research centres.”
“However, all too often, we watch our home-grown ideas collapse or move overseas due to a lack of local support. But, according to Perrottet, this is changing with districts like Tech Central, which he describes as having the “necessary infrastructure and eco-systems to expand.” With Atlassian being authorized as an anchor tenant, Tech Central will deliver up to 25,000 jobs to NSW over time.
Earlier this week, Q-CTRL, Sydney Quantum Academy, and Quantum Brilliance were welcomed as the inaugural tenants of Tech Central’s Quantum Terminal. Perrottet also announced intentions to establish a new commissioner to find local research and ideas that may be transformed into industrial possibilities at his Bradfield Oration. A task force led by Venues NSW chairman Tony Shepherd will assist the Modern Manufacturing Commissioner.
