The NSW Police Force has recently introduced a new role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO), which aims to provide support and assume the responsibilities currently held by NSW Police Assistant Commissioner and Commander of Digital Transformation and Innovation (DTI), Anthony Crandell.
According to a NSW police spokesperson, the introduction of the CTO role is part of a broader initiative to enhance the operationalization of technology within the NSWPF and improve policing.
Under the new operating model, a Commander of Technology Command will be established, with the CTO serving as a key supporting role, as stated by the spokesperson.
Previously, the NSW police merged the positions of Chief Information Officer (CIO) and CTO in 2017, creating the Chief Information and Technology Officer (CITO) position, which was filled by Gordon Dunsford until his departure in December 2021.
Following Dunford’s departure, a police commander took over the CITO position in April/May 2022, as confirmed by the spokesperson.
Assistant Commissioner Anthony Crandell, who assumed the role of DTI Commander in early 2022, continues to lead the DTI command in both the current and new organizational structure.
As outlined in the job listing on LinkedIn, the CTO will have overall responsibility for strategic technology initiatives, including planning, development, operation, maintenance, and implementation. The objective is to enhance the operational capability and efficiency of the NSWPF through technological advancements.
