NSW Government New Plan to Curb Single-Use Plastic Items

The New South Wales Government has announced that from November 1, 2022, a range of single-use plastic items will be banned in the state. The ban includes straws, cutlery, stirrers, bowls, plates, polystyrene food packaging, and cotton buds.

The move is part of the state’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution and protect the environment. Anyone caught supplying banned plastic items could be fined up to $11,000.

The ban is a welcome step in the fight against plastic pollution. Single-use plastics are a major source of pollution, particularly in oceans. They can take hundreds of years to break down and can cause serious harm to marine life.

Under the plan, a range of measures will be introduced to cut down on the 2.7 billion plastic items that are expected to end up in the natural environment over the next 20 years.

The ban also encompasses food picks, single-use plastic-stemmed cotton buds, single-use plastic-stemmed cotton buds, cleansers, and exfoliants containing plastic microbeads.

Restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, charities, and individuals undertaking an activity for sporting, education, or community purposes are all subject to the ban.

After lightweight plastic shopping bags were banned across the state in June, the second phase of the move is that retailers caught carrying the bags are fined $275,000.
