KitKat’s Sustainable Leap: 90% Recycled Plastic in Iconic Chocolate Bar Packaging

One of the most recognizable chocolate bars in the world, KitKat, has recently made a significant announcement that is sure to sweeten the deal for environmentally conscious consumers.

Nestlé, the company behind this iconic chocolate bar, has declared that they will be taking a giant leap towards sustainability by incorporating 90% recycled plastic into their packaging for the classic KitKat, KitKat Gold four-finger bars, KitKat Chunky Aero Mint bar, and the classic KitKat block.

This environmental-conscious initiative comes as a follow-up to Nestlé’s previous efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. In 2022, the company introduced packaging made with 30% recycled plastic, a step that established KitKat as Australia’s first food product wrapped in a more sustainable soft plastic.

Nestlé asserts that this represents the most substantial quantity of recycled soft plastic employed in confectionery packaging when compared to any other prominent food brand, resulting in the reduction of 1.2 square kilometres of virgin plastic production annually.

Margaret Stuart, the director of corporate affairs and sustainability for the confectionery company in the Oceania region, expressed the company’s commitment to reducing the use of virgin plastics by one-third by 2025.

“We are all familiar with the frustration of not currently being able to recycle our soft plastics, but we have engineered our wrappers to be recyclable in areas where collection facilities are in place,” Ms. Stuart explained.
