New Data Shows Aussies Favourite Destination Since Borders Reopening

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has revealed the most popular destination for Australians since borders reopened in November last year.

According to the data, the top five destinations for Australians since the border reopened have been New Zealand, Indonesia, UK.

The USA, Fiji, India, Singapore, Thailand, Italy, and Vietnam rounded out the top 10.

New Zealand was the most popular destination, with Australians making up almost half (47%) of all arrivals in the country over the whole 2021-2020 financial year. Indonesia was the second most popular destination, with Australians making up around one-quarter (24%) of all arrivals.

The United Kingdom was the third most popular destination, with Australians making up around one-fifth (21%) of all arrivals.

Daniel Finch, senior director at Expedia, said that the travel brand had noticed an uptick in short-haul, single-flight bookings had soared over more long-haul journeys with multiple stops.

“The most popular destination for travellers in the past year have been those that are just a direct flight away, with accessibility and ease being the main priorities,” Mr. Finch said.

“Since international borders reopened a year ago, it’s no surprise that Bali remains the top destination for travellers.” The data reveals that Australians are keen to travel again and are willing to spend more to do so. This is a positive sign for the future of the Australian tourism industry.
