Nationals provide in-principle support for a Net Zero 2050 target

Before Prime Minister Scott Morrison fly to participate in global climate talks, Nationals has given their full support to back a target of net-zero emission by 2050.

Previously, national leader Barnaby Joyce had some reservations over the policy. They were worried that the policy could lead to job loss in regional areas. However, the party met on Sunday afternoon to discuss the ongoing concern.

Barnaby said that majority of senators and members are now on board with the policy.

‘’ We are in support of a process going forward that would go towards a 2050 emissions target. That is dependent upon what we see in the cabinet submissions reflecting the conversations between me and the Prime Minister.’’

In the meeting on Sunday, there was no formal voting but two hours of talk including 21 members and senators.

Mr. Joyce, Deputy Prime Minister, shortly after the meeting called Morrison to alert him to the decision.

Though in the past, there had been criticism on the decision, however, by this time around, Mr. Joyce said his colleagues decided it was better to be in ‘’ in the tent’’.

‘’ The easy decision would be to say ‘no’ and join other people in screaming and yelling from the sidelines, having no influence on where the decision went.’’

Scott Morrison statement

Scott Morrison welcomes the National party’s decision to support the target, he says, ‘’ we recognize this has been a challenging issue for the Nationals.’’

He also thanks the DPM for his leadership and his colleagues for their considerable support. Also, showed respect towards their process of reaching such a decision.

Meanwhile, Nationals have attached some conditions backing net zero emissions by 2050 but the details are not yet revealed.

According to different sources, junior Coalition partner presented a list of demands to Scott Morrison about the proposed climate change policy.

Though, the Nationals are silent about the changes they want. Mr. Joyce again deny providing details about what the Prime Minister had offered or agreed to.

Mr. Joyce says the details of the negotiation will remain private. He also refuse to respond to the question of whether the National would get another seat in Cabinet for supporting the policy.

He further added, ‘’ any decision like that is a decision for the Prime Minister.’’

Though some Nationals had been pushing for nuclear to be included in the clean energy mix. However, before the meeting, Nationals Deputy leader David Littleproud indicated it would not be part of the plan.
