Kmart Group reevaluated its technology plan looking ahead to pursue a new goal. It shifts focus to automated decision making and in-store process removal. Brad Blyth, the CIO of Kmart and Target, recently spoke at a Microsoft webinar, where he shared the group’s new focus on automated decision making and the removal of in-store processes. Rather than digitization, to reduce unnecessary workload and refocus workers on “value” tasks.

According to Blyth, this new perspective on applying technology in retail operations came after attending the NRF 2023 retail show. Blyth attended the show in the United States in January.

Blyth identified the removal of in-store processes

The National Retail Federation (NRF) event, which has drawn technology leaders from top Australian retailers in the past. It  is often difficult to track from the outside. However, this year, with NRF being much larger, Microsoft provided highlights of the event last month.

During the webinar, Brad Blyth, the CIO of Kmart and Target, shared his observations from attending the event. Also, how it might impact Kmart Group’s approach to technology use this year.

Blyth identified the removal of in-store processes and the adoption of automated decision-making as a key takeaway from the NRF 2023 retail show.

He said, “There’s definitely lots more happening there than probably what our ambition was, so the takeaway there is definitely [to] double-down and accelerate what we’re doing there, because the technology’s come a long way,”

Blyth adds further, “There’s a ‘leapfrog’ opportunity there for us that we didnt perceive to be there before.” Even before attending the event, Kmrat mart Group had been rethinking some of its approach to in-store process digitisation.

Kmart team is quite optimisitic about the new goals and target. He said, “That’ll get us that next level of intelligence into our supply chain.”
