Instagram kids Version: Facebook delays App for users

On September 27, Facebook announced that it has stopped working on the new app concerning girl’s mental health. Policymakers, experts, advocates, and many parents criticized Facebook for raising concerns.

Facebook said that they believe ‘’ Instagram kids’’ is the right thing to do, but now they are pausing the work.

They further added, ‘’ we’ll use this time to work with Parents, experts, and policymakers to demonstrate the value and need for this product. We’ll continue to build opt-in supervision tools for teens. ‘’

Why there is so much Criticism about the kid’s Instagram?

U.S lawmakers and advocacy groups argue that social media giant has raised concerns of safety. They also believe that pause is not enough. The project must be completely abandoned.

Wall Street Journal report suggested that Instagram harms teenagers, specifically teen girls, and that Facebook had made minimum efforts to address the concerns.

Meanwhile, policymakers and advocates are satisfied with the Facebook decision and are looking forward to more actions. Josh Golin, executive director of Fairplay, an advocacy group focused on kids said,

‘’ We won’t stop pressuring Facebook until they permanently pull the plug.’’

US Lawmakers, Representative Kathy Castor and Lori Trahan believe the new project is affecting the mental health of the younger generation. ‘’ Facebook has completely forfeited the benefit of the doubt when it comes to protecting young people online and it must completely abandon this project,’’

Facebook Response

However, responding to the issue, Facebook said it’s‘’ not accurate’’. The project is not a bad idea, kids are already online, and Facebook is developing an age-appropriate experience for them.

‘’ We’re not the only company to think so. Our peers recognized these issues and built experiences for kids. YouTube and TikTok have versions of their app for those under 13.’’

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said, that social media service is pausing the work to resolve the concerns and demonstrate the value of the kid’s version. It also allows parents to monitor the activities of Children.

He added,

‘’ I still firmly believe that it’s a good thing to build a version of Instagram that’s safe for tweens, but we want to take the time to talk to parents and researchers, and safety experts and get more consensus about how to move forward.’’

Facebook global head of Safety Antigone Davis will answer questions in the upcoming US Senate committee, and it is expected to be asked about Instagram kids.
