As part of a multi-year agreement with Charles Sturt University, IBM will construct a client innovation center in the small NSW city of Bathurst and hire hundreds of employees. The hub, which is anticipated to open in the second half of 2022, will employ around 300 experts, most of whom will be new hires and CSU students.
It would “serve IBM customer demand across Australia, offering technical experience and ‘hot talents’ in areas of data science, cyber security, AI, and hybrid cloud.” The center is also anticipated to provide scholarships and job placements, providing students with “valuable industrial work experience” to boost their employment prospects. On Thursday, NSW deputy premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole announced the agreement, saying it is excellent that IBM is “establishing a base of operations in the bush.” “By bringing possibilities closer to home now and in the future, establishing a regional innovation centre at CSU will give the Central West with more job chances,” he added. Toole stated that the relationship was aided by the government’s $130 million regional job development fund, providing up to $10 million in co-funding.
Katrina Troughton, managing director of IBM A/NZ, said the digital skills issue, which had deteriorated since the pandemic, necessitated innovative ways to talent development and recruit. She went on to say that the skills gap might be closed by “creating and growing varied and regional talent pools.” “To fully contribute to and participate in tomorrow’s digital economy, students today must have digital savvy and literacy,” she stated. According to CSU vice-chancellor professor Renée Leon, the cooperation is “historic” for regional NSW, generating a “rich of opportunities” for students, staff, and researchers.
As part of the collaboration, IBM would “help in the co-creation of courses focusing on the interface of technology and business transformation for innovation.”
“I’d like to thank IBM Australia for their assistance in establishing this alliance, which demonstrates how CSU is promoting our students’ careers, motivating important research, and delivering regional outcomes with global influence,” she added.
