Hypersonic green hydrogen-powered aircraft

Destinus- Swiss start-up company is developing hypersonic green hydrogen-powered aircraft. It aims to fly anywhere in the world in around a few hours. The Spanish Ministry of Science’s Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico e Industrial (CDTI) program has selected Destinus to participate in a strategic initiative. Also, receive grants to support its project for supersonic flight replacing fuel with hydrogen.

The Spanish Ministry allocated €12 million for the project under its Plan de Tecnologías Aeronáuticas (PTA). It also involves companies, technology centers and spanish universities in the project In June 2022, Destinus and ITP Aero, a company from Spain that makes engines, agreed to work together to build a place where they can test hydrogen engines. Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA) supported them in the project.

Destinus will help make the engines better by testing them over and over again. They also got more money to study how to make airplanes go faster using hydrogen. This project will cost €15 million.

Advanced research and accelerate the innovation

Davide Bonetti, VP of Business Development and Products for Destinus, said: “For deep tech companies like us, access to these EU recovery funds is essential to carry out advanced research and accelerate the innovation needed to be competitive on a global scale. With these grants, hydrogen-based solutions for aeronautical mobility will be one step closer to becoming a reality.”

Moreover, last week Thomas Haagensen, easyJet’s European director, told EURACTIV:

“We want to make sure that investments don’t distract from any investments in hydrogen, for instance, where we see the future of aviation for short-haul… Everyone needs to start thinking about the future technology and about hydrogen as a potential solution.”

Destinus is a company that is working hard to do research and make money. They are also working with others to make their ideas even better. They have offices in Germany, Spain, and France, which makes it possible for them to get more money from the government. Because of all these things, Destinus is doing better than many other new companies. They want to make it possible for people to travel around the world in just four hours. It looks like they will be able to do it soon.
