Google is partnering with Vocus to construct a new trans-Pacific subsea cable system, known as the South Pacific Connect initiative, that will provide enhanced connectivity between the United States and Australia, with key links in Fiji and French Polynesia. This cable network will form a ring connecting Australia, Fiji, and French Polynesia, with two main trans-Pacific cables named “Honomoana” and “Tabua” that will establish connections between the US, French Polynesia, Fiji, and Australia.
Additionally, a third “interlink” cable will link Fiji and French Polynesia to facilitate connectivity between the two primary cables. The project will also include branching units at various points, allowing other Pacific Island nations to connect to the subsea cable system.
This development is hailed as a crucial infrastructure project, particularly for the Pacific region, as it will provide redundancy for international connectivity in an area prone to natural disasters.
Collaboration is known as the ”Innovation Alliance”
The United States and Australian governments are partnering to fund additional connections to Pacific Island countries. This collaboration, known as the “Innovation Alliance,” is committed to providing US$65 million to support future submarine cable connectivity in the Pacific region. The goal is to improve access to global markets and enhance regional connectivity goals.
Google, in partnership with cable provider Hawaiki Nui, will work with Pacific Island countries to establish branching units for Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. This initiative aims to provide primary connectivity and secure redundancy options for countries already connected to subsea cables.
Australia’s international connectivity capacity
Vocus is Google’s preferred partner for the South Pacific Connect initiative. Vocus CEO Ellie Sweeney expressed delight in this partnership, emphasizing the critical importance of subsea cables in today’s digital infrastructure. The new cable system will enhance Australia’s international connectivity capacity, reliability, and resilience. It will establish three diverse Australian landings and dual cable paths to the US, thereby strengthening the country’s critical connections with the world.
This project stands as one of the first of its kind in the Pacific region, with a particular focus on providing redundant international connectivity, a key requirement in an area susceptible to natural disasters.
This strategic partnership, government support, and critical infrastructure investment reflect the growing significance of robust connectivity solutions in today’s digital landscape.
