Services NSW and Services Australia have decided to support one another’s efforts to implement digital ID.
While the federal government will allow myGov users to connect their digital driver’s licence to the wallet, the NSW government will change its Services NSW app to support digital Medicare cards.
Yesterday, Bill Shorten, the federal minister for government services, and Victor Dominello, the NSW minister for digital and customer service, announced the agreement.
Dominello claimed that 80 percent of citizens of NSW had adopted the digital driver’s licence during a joint press conference.
The Service NSW app, which serves as the wallet for the driver’s licence, has a high adoption rate as a result of this.
In a single digital wallet, Dominello said he intended to provide users the choice to hold several government credentials.
“If they want to use the myGov app, that’s fine. If they want to use both, that’s fine. If they want to use the Google or Apple watch, that’s fine, too, as long as the privacy and security settings are in place.”
According to Shorten, the Commonwealth can implement the transition within myGov’s current budget, and support for digital driver’s licences will be available no later than the third quarter of this year.
According to Dominello, NSW hopes to make adjustments on its end “before the end of the year, but at a stretched aim early in the new year,” all while staying within the allocated budget.
The agreement, according to Dominello, “is not only about shifting credentials wherever people like; it’s about establishing a framework to resolve some wrinkles in the digital system at the moment.”
